About The Grey Foundation

Investing in girls’ education and health is important as it boosts their confidence, fosters economic growth, and ensures they can positively contribute to global change. Sadly, in some impoverished schools within South Africa, young girls are impacted by losing vital days of schooling during their menstrual cycles. Studies show that 88% of girls in South African schools have no access to sanitary pads, and that one in three girls miss approximately four days of school each month to avoid embarrassment and discomfort due to a lack of access to sanitary products. The root cause of this issue is poverty. When faced with the choice between buying food or sanitary pads, many girls choose food and are forced to use alternatives such as torn cloth, plants, or old newspapers. There are thousands of girls in need of these basic items that many women consider a necessity, and it is our belief at The Grey Foundation that together we can make a difference by supporting girls through their schooling years and providing access to sanitary pads to ease discomfort and prevent embarrassment.

Sustainable Sanitary Supply

Investing in a girls education and health is fundamental as it boosts confidence, creates hope and fosters economic growth. A study shows that 88% of girls in South African schools have no access to sanitary pads and 1 in 3 girls miss approximately 4 days of school a month. This is a great challenge in terms of hygiene and sanitation. For girls who are menstruating, these problems are compounded by the inability to afford sanitary pads and this lack of access means missing school to avoid discomfort and embarrassment. These young girls resort to either using strips of cloth, plants or old newspapers. Within South Africa, there are hundreds of thousands of girls facing this situation on a monthly basis and it is our goal at the Grey Foundation to provide a solution of sustainable change.
